Ireland
Ireland’s largest Norman castle served as King John’s castle in the movie Braveheart.
Trim Castle was built in the 12th century on a hill overlooking a crossing of the River Boyne. The area was an important medieval ecclesiastical and royal site, and during medieval times and served as the seat of the Norman administration for the Lordship of Meath. Covering 30,000 square meters, it’s the largest and best preserved Norman castle in Ireland. The towering keep at the heart of the castle is partly ruined, with its wooden floors have long since rotted away. Even so, it’s a fascinating example of medieval defensive architecture, with its elevated entrance, the narrow windows for archers, and spiral staircases to give defenders the upper-hand. A guided tour adds even more life to the moss-covered walls, offering insights into the daily lives of the people who once lived here - right down to how they’d dry their clothes over the toilets to kill off bugs.
