Trinitarian Abbey of Adare

This Neo-Gothic church incorporates the medieval elements of Ireland’s only Trinitarian stronghold.

About

The Trinitarian Abbey was founded in 1230 as the only monastery of the Trinitarian Order in Ireland. The order itself was founded by St John de Matha and St. Felix de Valois to free Christians taken captive during the Crusades. During the Reformation, the abbey was suppressed and eventually fell into ruin. In 1811, the first Earl of Dunraven restored the site to serve as the local parish church, incorporating any surviving medieval elements into his Gothic Revival structure. Today, the medieval tower, nave, and choir are complemented by the timber roofs, the sacristy, Chapel designed in the 19th century by English architect, and illuminated by colorful stained glass windows. Nearby, you’ll find a restored dovecote, and part of the original medieval cloister in the Our Lady’s Abbey School. For more information, please visit www.adareparish.ie
