The ruins of hundreds of round buildings mark what was once the hilltop capital of a mighty pre-Incan civilization.
Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Tunanmarca Archaeological Complex was a thriving city; the high-altitude capital of the Huanca civilization. At its height, Tunanmarca was home to 20,000 people, who lived in the distinctive round buildings. After falling to the Inca in the 1400s, the city eventually fell into ruin. Today, the archaeological site consists of 430 circular structures centered around a fortified central area. While little more than the foundations remain of many of Tunanmarca’s buildings, seeing hundreds of stone structures take up an entire hilltop, still gives a sense of the city’s former importance, made more impressive by the stunning natural backdrop.
