Argentina
Peruse the boutique wineries of this fertile settlement in Valle de Uco.
Don’t be fooled by its small size - the quaint wine and nut capital of Argentina has a lot to offer. Prior to the Spanish settlement back in 1658, the region was populated by the Huarpe ethnic group, who was dispersed through the surrounding mountain ranges. Though few traces of these early settlers remain today, the immigrants who came in the 19th century began a legacy of horticulture and viticulture that has endured to this day. The climate and soil have allowed for the successful cultivation of onions, nuts, potatoes, carrots, and wine, which can be tasted at one of two boutique wineries located in the center of town (these may be visited according to timetable availability). Grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee on the main avenue, Belgrano, and take a stroll through the serene, adobe-lined downtown, where you can find a statue of General Jose de San Martin - also known as the Liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru - as its centerpiece.
