The thousands of rock carvings at this UNESCO World Heritage Site record thousands of years of bushman culture.
Twyfelfontein, literally ‘uncertain spring’ in Afrikaans, is a rocky valley that’s been inhabited for at least 6,000 years. During this time, the San tribes living in the valley carved over 2,500 images into the rock here, likely using quartz tools. Along with engravings of indigenous animals, like antelope, zebras, giraffes, and lions, are hunters with bow and arrow, and human shelters - oddly enough there’s even a seal, even though the ocean is over 100 kilometers away. Along with archaeological excavations, these carvings offer a high-quality history of hunter-gatherer culture.
