Made famous by its appearance in Eat, Pray, Love, Ubud is the artistic heart of Bali with a vast art market, and fantastic museums and monuments.
According to tradition, Ubud’s origins date back to the 8th century with the founding of the Gunung Lebah Temple, which still remains a pilgrimage destination. Ubud began attracting tourists after Walter Spies entertained celebrities like Charlie Chaplin and H.G. Wells, and brought in some of Bali’s greatest artists. Today, the town is still Bali’s artistic epicenter, hosting countless shops selling antiques, artwork, and jewellery, and some of the country’s best art museums. One such is the Blanco Renaissance Museum, where visitors can tour of the late artist’s home to see his provocative artwork, often depicting favourite subject: nude Balinese women. Another cultural landmark is 19th century Ubud Royal Palace, where you’ll be able to admire exquisite Balinese art and architecture, charming gardens, and in the evenings, dramatic dance performances. At the Sacred Monkey Forest, you’ll not only find playful macaques, but a series of serene temples, in a lush environment.
