Italy
A Renaissance landmark, the entire city was redesigned and rebuilt by renaissance masters to create a setting fitting for its magnificent palace.
During the 6th century Gothic Wars, this tiny Roman town became an important stronghold. By the end of the 13th century, it was an important regional centre, and positively flourished during the Renaissance. In the mid-15th century, Federico da Montefeltro became Duke of Urbino, and began to reorganizate the state, restructuring the city according to a modern conception - comfortable, efficient and beautiful. The resulting ducal palace was more “a city with the form of a palace”, and today houses one of the most important collections of Renaissance paintings in the world. For those who truly worship Renaissance art, the master Raphael was born here, and his home is now a museum. Another hidden gem is the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista, which is covered in vibrant 15th century frescoes. Wandering within this walled town is a treat with its abundance of remarkably well preserved medieval and renaissance sights.
