Filled with fascinating details, this ancient Roman city is the site of one of North Africa’s largest amphitheaters.
Uthina was made a Roman colony for veterans of the Legio XIII Gemina during the reign of Emperor Augustus. Despite being mentioned by Ptolemy, Pliny the Elder, and the Tabula Peutingeriana, little is known about the city. Scattered throughout this archaeological site, you’ll find the remains of a cisterns, public and private baths, an aqueduct, a triumphal arch, and a basilica. Keep an eye out for the remains of mosaics, and other ancient details, such as the ironic signs leading to the underground brothel. However, the main attraction is the colossal amphitheater. Dating from the reign of Hadrian, it could seat around 16,000 spectators, making it one of the largest in North Africa. Partially restored, visitors can admire its ancient workmanship from above, and from its underground vaulted gallery.
