Founded in 1552, Valdivia was once the southernmost city in the Spanish Empire and one of the most fortified cities of the New World. In the mid-19th century, Valdivia was the main port of entry for German immigrants who reshaped the city’s identity, making it a hub for beer, sausages, and Old World culture. In 1960 Valdivia was devastated by the strongest earthquake ever recorded, with floods from the resulting tsunami turning pastures and parts of the city into permanent wetlands, which are now protected areas. The best place to start a visit to Valdivia is the riverside market, where you can enjoy the view of the and feed the local sea lions and pelicans. You can also hop on a cruise to tour the many ruined forts if you’re staying longer (tours are about 5 hours). From here, head to General Lagos St. to admire the German-style houses and maybe grab a sausage. For beer lovers and Bavariaphiles, head to the Cervecería Kunstmann on the outskirts to learn about brewing history and sip a sudsy cerveza.
