Netherlands
The ruins of the Netherlands' only hilltop castle sits atop a labyrinth of tunnels.
First built as a wooden keep in 1115, just seven years later it was destroyed by Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor. Over the centuries, the castle was rebuilt and destroyed on multiple occasions. What is left standing today are the ruins of the 14th century castle that was decimated once heavy cannons and mortars were brought to the battlefield. While the castle ruins offer great views of the town below, the network of medieval tunnels beneath the castle are a unique sight of their own. Used during the Middle Ages as a secret entrance, the tunnels helped hide Jews and Allied soldiers during World War II.
