Spain
The whitewashed houses and winding narrow streets of this charming town atop a rocky hill retained a tangible Moorish presence.
One of the favourite spots in Vejer is the Plaza de España, where a visitors and locals can relax near a beautiful spouting frog fountain covered in ceramic tiles, surrounded by palms. It's a perfect place to enjoy a pint of cerveza with tapas and just watch the world go by. From there, it only takes around minutes of walk up the hill to the Moorish castle, its ramparts affording magnificent panoramic views across the town and down to the coastline. On a good day, one can see as far as the Atlantic Ocean and Morocco. Just below the castle, there is the Estatua de la Cobijada, a statue of a woman sporting a covering that was traditional until less than a century ago.
