Pastel buildings, medieval monuments make this little village the crown jewel of the UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre.
Considered the jewel of the UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre, Vernazza is a jumble of pastel buildings around a rocky harbor. Watching over the harbor is the medieval Doria Castle, which originally protected the village from pirates, but now offers fabulous views of the picturesque town. Standing above the cozy cafes, craft shops and wine bars is the beautiful, 14th century Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia, which is said to be built on the spot where a box containing the bones of Saint Margaret kept returning. While the waterfront deservedly gets the most attention, be it walking, or sunning on the rocks, it’s worth taking the time to wander the steep alleyways for the unexpected vistas of the sea that pop up at every turn.
