Considered one of the most impressive buildings from the Middle Ages in the area, Verrès Castle stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the village below.
While the first mentions of a castle on the site date back to 1287, it is Ibleto of Challant who is credited with the 14th-century construction of the castle in its current form. Verrès Castle is considered one of the first examples of a castle constructed as a single structure, rather than the more common design of a series of buildings enclosed in a circuit wall. Further renovations took place in the 16th century to take into account the appearance of firearms and modernize the castle to provide optimal defense. From the outside, the castle has the appearance of an austere cube measuring approximately 30 metres on each side. Inside the complex, however, visitors will find themselves immersed in a much different atmosphere thanks to the majesty of the main staircase, set on rampant arches, and the decoration of the windows, doors, and monumental fireplaces.
