Journey above the clouds to see the highest railway bridge in the world.
Completed in 1932, the Polvorilla Viaduct holds the title of “highest railway bridge in the world”, spanning an Andean ravine 13,842 feet (4,220 meters) above sea level. The steel structure is an icon of northwestern Argentina, and while it was originally used for freight trains, now serves as the last stop for the famous “Train to the Clouds”. When approaching by car, you’re first treated to a view of the bridge cutting across the rocky ravine. After snapping some pictures from the base, you can scale the steep embankment to the viaduct and walk across it to one of the platforms for a fantastic birds eye view of the area (just make sure to check the train schedule in advance to make sure you’re not on the tracks when it comes). As this is a popular tourist destination, there’s also usually locals selling handicrafts if you need to pick up a souvenir.
