Chile
Get the best views in Araucanía from this overlooked lakeside town.
Founded in 1552, Villarrica is the sixth oldest city in Chile, but between wars with the indigenous tribes and multiple volcanic eruptions, much of its early colonial past has been erased. Instead, it’s the blending of German, Dutch, and indigenous Mapuche cultures, with a sprinkling of modernity that defines the city’s atmosphere. Villarrica never quite reached the tourist-destination status of nearby Pucón, but that makes stopping here even more worthwhile. The view of the Villarrica Volcano across the lake can’t be beat, and makes for a dramatic backdrop for lounging on the beach. And the rustic Mercado Nehuen is a great place to pick up some artisan crafts like woven blankets and wood carvings without feeling like you’re shopping in a tourist knick-knack shop.
