Estonia
This popular nature reserve captures the iconic landscape of Estonia, offering peat bogs, lakes and raised bogs to freely wander through.
The Viru Bog is one of many boglands in Estonia and passes through the Lahemaa National Park, with accessible trails that place you right in the country’s characteristic landscape. A 3.5km trail will lead you through the remnants of ancient sand dunes, winding ridges, heath forest, eskers and a woodland of low-growing shrubs. Bogs are the oldest landscapes in Estonia, with some up to 10,000 years old after being formed in the last ice age. Boardwalks line the trail where visitors are free to wander through uninhibited nature. The supernatural has long been associated with boglands, and walking through the bogs, it’s easy to feel as though you’ve been placed in a mythical land. Visit in winter for a veritable wonderland, douse yourself in orange colors in Autumn, or take in the lush surroundings in spring and summer. An observation tower in the middle of the Viru Bog offers spectacular views of the natural landscape.
