Brazil
Soak up sun and history in this pleasant seaside city.
Vitoria was founded by the Portuguese as the Espírito Santo state capital 1551, but didn’t really prosper until the 20th century. Now, it’s one of the best places to live in Brazil. You have a number of serene beaches (as with most other cities in Brazil, check the water quality report before swimming) and green spaces to enjoy. Parque Pedra da Cebola, with its manicured gardens crowned by a strange rock formation, and Vale Botanical Park are perennial favorites. Or hike to the top of Morro do Moreno for some fantastic views of the coast. For a bit of history, head to the “Centro” district. While a bit tired, the Old Town has some gems, like the 16th century Palácio Anchieta, which now serves as a government building and offers tours. And while technically in Vila Velha, the once can’t-miss monument is the 16th century Convento da Penha. Molded to a rocky outcrop, you get amazing panoramic views, historic architecture, and beautiful decor all in one place.
