Vrsac

Watched over by the ruins of a medieval castle, this historic city is best known for its beautiful baroque architecture and its Vinik winery.

About

While the area has been inhabited since paleolithic times, historians believe the town of Vršac was founded by Serbs in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the Ottomans destroyed the town in their conquest, but quickly rebuilt it under their administration. Having had a good relationship with Germany, and even merged with a nearby settlement, during the early 1900s the town’s primary language was German. Today, visitors can enjoy the city’s wealth of historic architecture. The city’s old marketplace, Save Kovačevića Square, is now a pleasant pedestrian area. The interior of the 18th century Orthodox cathedral is brightly painted by prominent Serbian artists, but Vršac’s most imposing building is the Roman Catholic Church. Completed in 1863, the neo-Gothic edifice is one of the largest in the area, and is painted from floor to ceiling. In the Vršac National Museum, artefacts and artwork are used to tell the area’s history.
