Vrsar

Settled since prehistoric times, this ancient town has managed to retain its cultural history.

About

Set on a small hill, and surrounded by islets, Vrsar offers visitors beautiful views and stunning sunsets. If you look within the ancient, circular walls, you can see the remnants of thousands of years of occupation. Since very few buildings ventured outside the fortified walls until the 19th century, a walk through the old town is like walking through Vrsar’s past. The town’s gate, dating to the 13th century, is still in use, and the various churches showcase Christianity’s architectural development. The remains of a 4th century basilica are in the walled-in backyard of the 12th century Romanesque basilica of St. Mary. The architecture isn’t the only history Vrsar has saved – they also have an annual celebration to commemorate Casanova’s visits to the town. Art fans shouldn’t miss Dušan Džamonja’s Park of Sculptures, which covers a hill with the world-renowned artist’s work.
