This short, gentle, pleasant forest and waterfall walk proves a nice break from the road.
On your way up the Abel Tasman Coast the Wainui Falls Track makes for a great place to stretch your legs for a while and immerse yourself in nature, all the while not putting too much strain on the legs. From the car park just off the main road an easy path makes it’s way through the native forest of nikau palms, rata trees and ferns. The track follows the Wainui River for around 45 minutes, crossing at one point using a modern 10-person capacity swing bridge, until you reach the biggest and most accessible fall in the Golden Bay area. The falls themselves are 20 metres tall, cascading over granite rocks to a plunge pool below. The pool makes for a great cooling off spot on the hottest of days. Keep an eye out for the carnivorous Powelliphanta, one of the world’s largest snails.
