New Zealand
Explorers willing to do a bit of wading are rewarded with stunning caverns filled with stalagmites, stalactites, and glow worms.
The Waipu Caves are an undeveloped and unguided (and free!) subterranean geological adventure. Not only do they include the largest cave passage in the Northland, the limestone caverns are ornamented by some striking stalactites and stalagmites, with a stream running through the middle. Since the caves are undeveloped, they remain a habitat for local wildlife, including the large colonies of New Zealand’s famous glow worms. Those who make it to the deepest of the three chambers are rewarded with a “galaxy” of bio-luminescent insects dangling from the ceiling. Please note: you’ll need to bring your own torch (flashlight) and appropriate shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty.
