Take a hike among the lagoons and marshes that straddle the shore, where the old rusted carcasses of ships lay beached amidst the reeds.

About

A long, but relatively flat path that crosses through picturesque, almost surreal, settings; the Wairau Lagoon Walkway is a perfect walk for all ages. Crossing over salt marshes and lowlands, the trek is set in a quite unique setting with a winding wooden boardwalk and dirt paths transversing over tall grass and flooded marshes. Adding to this dreamscape is the rusted hull of the SS Waverley, standing like a wethered testament to the power of the elements. Further along the trail by the river is the wreckage of the SS Kenedy, in a similar condition. These fallen ships stand in stark contrast to all the wildlife that can be seen in this unique ecosystem sitting at the edge of the world. Make sure to bring some waterproof shoes as the march through this terrain can get quite wet. There is also very little cover from the elements so grab a windbreaker or some sun screen depending on the weather.
