You can enjoy a variety of exciting activities in this stunning cave system is filled with beautiful formations, glow worms, and an underground river.
Known by local Māori since the 18th century, the Waitomo caves were first “formally” explored in 1884, and have been cherished as a natural treasure ever since. To this day, many of the guides are direct descendants of the Maori chief who originally explored the cave. The cave system is split into two levels, with the upper, dry passageways exhibiting fantastic stalactites, stalagmites, and other cave formations. A river runs through the lower level, so tours take place on a boat, from which you’ll be able to admire the galaxies of glow worms and drift through “The Cathedral” - the largest chamber in the system. There are also a number of unique experience for the more adventurous, like “Black Water Rafting”, tubing, and underground abseiling and zip-lining. Regardless of your activity of choice, you should book in advance at https://www.waitomo.com
