Victoria's 5th Largest Gold Mine
The Walhalla Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine was initially a massive failure, with not enough gold being unearthed over the course of the first 8 years to be profitable. However, after the Long Tunnel Extended Company took over operations in 1871, they started digging in the other direction and hit the mother lode. Over the next 40 years, the mine would produce 13.7 tonnes of gold, making it the fifth largest gold mine in Victoria. By the time the gold vein was exhausted, the mine had created 8.5 kilometres of tunnels ad reached a depth of 923 meters. Today, visitors can delve 300 meters into the mine on a guided tour to learn more about its history, operations, and the lives of miners from local experts, see the heavy machinery, and catch a glimpse of the famous Cohens Reef. For the mine-minded there's even the option for a "technical tour", which delves into more detail on mining techniques, ventilation, and the mine's unique haulage method. Please note: on weekdays, tours are ONLY at 1:30pm. On weekends and school holidays, tours are held at 12:00 noon; 1:30pm and 3:00pm.
