Wamala Tombs

These rare thatch-roofed tombs enshrine one of Uganda’s most prolific kings.

About

The Wamala Tombs were built in the 19th century for Kabaka Suuna II, King of Buganda. The largest of Uganda’s the traditional territories, he was the first king to allow outsiders into his territory. He also had 148 wives and 218 children, and was the last king to have his jawbone (where the spirit is held) enshrined. Even today, the king’s descendants tend the tombs (though less than they should), and they remain an important site for traditional religious ceremonies hosted by the royal family. For visitors, this offers an incredibly rare chance to see a traditional tomb - there’s only one other such site in the country.
