Immerse yourself in the vibrant greenery of this "pocket of paradise where moa once roamed".
Formed following a volcanic eruption around 80 million years ago, Washpen Falls has blossomed into a lush, bushy canyon. The Black Beech, Rata, Horopito, and Cabbage trees provide a home for fantails, bellbirds and falcons, and centuries ago, the giant moa. During the medium-hard, 2-hour hike, you'll be surrounded with the smells of the earth and calling birds. Don't worry if you get tired on the way - there are plenty of spots along the loop perfect for a picnic. The beautiful waterfall is only one of the rewards awaiting you. At the top of the climb, you'll also be treated to fabulous views across the Canterbury plains to the Pacific Ocean. Entrance is $10.00 per adult / $5.00 per child (under 15), but this includes a track guide and use of walking sticks, all you have to bring is your hiking gear and your water bottle!
