Malaysia
A centerpiece of Thai culture in the area, the founder of this ornate temple helped spread Buddhism in Malaysia.
Wat Uttamaram was built around 1925 in the middle of what was then a dense jungle by its first abbot, Khron Ratchanaren. Khron Ratchanaren would become famous in Southern Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia thanks to his dedication, and become known as Tok Raja. Along with helping spread Buddhism, Tok Raja was famous for his mystical amulets depicting a seated figure with their hands covering their face. Within the ornate and brightly colored compound, visitors can pay their respects to Tok Raja at his tomb, or learn about (and buy) sacred amulets. The beautiful temple complex also the epicenter of the local Thai community, so there are frequently festivals and cultural events. For more information, please visit http://watuttamaram.com
