New Zealand
From forest to farmland to coastal cliffs, this pleasant hike showcases the region’s beautiful landscapes.
The Whitecliffs Walkway works its way through open farmland and rocky ridge tops before following the Waipingau Stream and heading down to the coast. Tide permitting, from here you can enjoy a walk along the black sand beach, sandwiched between the stark white cliffs and fish-filled sea. This amazing walk comes courtesy of the gas pipeline connecting Taranaki and Auckland, which opened access to the region’s dramatic forest and coastal country - a rare instance of a benefit from such projects. Please note that the beach is only accessible within 2 hours each side of low tide, so you’ll want to plan your visit accordingly.
