Inspired by Aboriginal philosophies and traditions, one naturalist dedicated himself to educating people about the importance of connecting with nature.
The William Ricketts Sanctuary was created by William Ricketts, a potter and sculptor by trade, who had a great interest in the environment and nature. Ricketts spent over a decade traveling to Central Australia to spend time with the Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte Aboriginal communities. It was then that he immersed himself in their traditions and culture which later influenced his philosophies and works. The communities emphasized spirituality and placed huge importance on connection with the natural world, which resonated with Ricketts. He took their words and practices to heart to create what is now known as the William Ricketts Sanctuary. In the sanctuary, nearly 100 statues are carved into rocks and trees to represent the Aboriginal people he met and their outlook on life. The space set deep in the trees serves as a place of reflection, connection with nature and spiritual replenishment.
