Poland
The largest Baroque fortified residence in the country, this preserved castle is a sight to behold, inside and out.
Originally erected in the mid-14th century, constant revisions and expansions have left this once simple castle with an irregular shape and mixture of architectural styles. 16th century alterations transformed it into a renaissance residence, while additional fortifications made in 1615 saw eighty cannons placed on the new bastions. This firepower made Wiśnicz one of the most powerful strongholds in Poland, though were no match for the invading Swedish army, who made off with 150 wagon-loads of loot. Considered one of the country’s most beautiful castles, a tour (in Polish) of the renovated interiors shows off the regal furnishes. There is also exhibition of the castle’s history, a collection of copper vessels, models of Polish castles, and the sarcophagus of Stanislaus Lubomirski.
