Poland
The city that gave Copernicus his early education has centuries of history to explore.
Włocławek’s history stretches back over 3000 years, through local tribes, Romans, and ambitious European empires. With such a long history, it’s home to some singular sites. One of the most important is Copernicus Square, dedicated to when Nicolaus Copernicus studied at the cathedral school, where he built the sundial that’s on the Cathedral Basilica. To see his work, head to the Basilica Cathedral of the St. Mary Assumption, a gothic cathedral built between 1340-1411. It is one of the country’s oldest and highest churches, and filled with some breathtaking artwork, including the oldest stained glass windows in Poland. St. Witalis Curch is the oldest building in Włocławek, dating back to 1330, and home to some beautiful Polish 15th century paintings. For those looking something more recent, the Marina won many architectural competitions and offers a pleasant place to relax by the river.
