About

Wymondham Abbey was founded in 1107 by William d'Aubigny, Butler to King Henry I. Over the centuries this Norman church was enlarged and embellished with its distinctive twin towers and a fine angel roof. Following the dissolution of monasteries in 1538, about half the original building was destroyed. Today, they abbey treats visitors to centuries of religious imagery, from the Norman nave to the 15th century roof, 18th century organ and amazing 20th century gilded altar screen. You’ll also find early Tudor terracotta sedilia, a Georgian candelabrum, and carved medieval font with a modern gilded cover. Informative signs and friendly stewards are on hand to shed light on the abbey’s long history and many treasures.
