Xpujil

The popular base for exploring the region’s famous Mayan ruins has some unusual ruins of its own.

About

Today, Xpujil is a quiet village that’s a popular home base for tourists looking to explore the famous Mayan ruins dot the region. Many visitors, however, don’t know that Xpujil itself was once a thriving Mayan settlement with ruins of its own. Inhabited between the 4th and 13th centuries, most of the structures here are typical of the Classic Río Bec architectural style, including their use of “false” temples, which have no feasible function. However, the dully named “Structure 1” is unique in the region for its three-tower construction, rather than the usual two.
