Yarrangobilly Caves

Discovered by a humble cattleman in 1834, these might be the finest showcaves in Australia.

About

Formed several million years ago out of 440-million year old limestone, the Yarrangobilly Caves had apparently lain completely undisturbed until stockman John Bowman came across the complex in the 1830’s. There are four caves that can be visited. The South Glory Cave has a 470 metre and 206 step, and is a self-guided cave. The other three can be visited with a guide. Jersey Cave is noted for its ash-cloured rare displays of black and grey flowstone, scorched from ancient bushfires. Jillabenan Cave features flowstone shawls, helictites, cave coral, and soda straw stalactites. The North Glory Cave features three grand chambers - Queens Chamber, Helictite Chamber and Devils Kitchen. If you take the tour please allow 3 hours to complete. If you’re happy to tackle a steep 700m bush track there is also an outdoor thermal pool on site heated by waters bubbling up from 762 metres below the ground.
