Zadar is located in the heart of the Croatian Adriatic and is Croatia's 5th largest city. It was founded in the 1st Century BC by the Romans and has been ruled by many since. Today, the peaceful town is rich in preserved cultural monuments from the Roman period and Middle Ages. The historic old town is set on a small peninsula surrounded by fortress walls. There are many Roman ruins, medieval churches, museums, art installations, and cafes. St. Donatus’ Church, built in the 9th century, is the most famous medieval basilica and a trademark of the city.
