Qatar
With the advent of oil operations in the 1940’s, Zekreet emerged as a charming village featuring a fascinating fort complex.
Derived from the Arabic word "zikra," meaning "memories" in English, the Zekreet Fort Ruins are located in the northwestern region of Qatar near Dukhan and sit amidst a breathtaking environment adorned with archaeological ruins. Along the seashore of the charming village of Zekreet, discover an 18th century fort and an early date press, offering glimpses into the past. Only three of the originally planned four towers were completed, with the remnants offering echoes of the past. On the coastal side of the fort lie the remains of “madabes”, which were chambers utilized for the preparation of “debis”, a traditional snack made from dates. Inside the rooms, observe parallel channels etched deep into the floor that lead to a canal near the entrance. Wander through the fort’s intriguing chambers and marvel at the stunning coastal surroundings in a testament to Qatar’s rich heritage and history.
