With its UNESCO-listed wooden church, pleasant square, and royal castle, this little town is big on history.
Zhovkva was founded in 1594 by Polish nobleman Stanisław Żółkiewski as a private fortified town, and flourished for centuries thanks to its strategic location on important trade routes. The town’s ideal Renaissance urban plan even attracted King John III Sobieski of Poland in the 17th century, making it a hub of religion, art, and commerce. Up until World War II, about half the town’s population was Jewish, but nearly all were killed during the Holocaust, and their fortress-like synagogue bombed. Today, the structure is considered one of the world’s most endangered sites by the World Monuments Fund, and gradually being restored. At the top of the town’s colorful square, the historic castle being restored to its former glory, and in the completed section, visitors will find a museum dedicated to the town’s fascinating history. On the outskirts of town, visitors will find Zhovkva’s 18th century, UNESCO-listed wooden church, which is filled with rich artwork.
