Zosim Oancea Glass Icons Museum

This collection of 700 vibrant icons, supplemented with handicrafts, is a truly unique display of traditional artistry.

About

Behind the 18th-century Sfânta Treime church, with its finely frescoed interior, and time-worn graveyard, lies this hidden gem of a museum. Unlike the wooden icons featured prominently in Romania’s many churches, the 700 icons spread across two floors are vibrant and luminous. The trick lies in the 300-year-old technique: painting on the back off glass, using gold leaf accents attached with egg white and garlic. The gallant St Georges, mournful Virgin Marys, and Bible scenes are accompanied by other traditional crafts, such as decorated eggs, and woven blankets.
