Czechia
This medieval castle was the first seat of the Kings of Bohemia and protector of the crown jewels.
Built in the 13th century by King Přemysl Otakar I, Zvikov Castle’s strategic position at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers provided ample protection for some of the most important men in Czech history. Most notably, the country’s favourite sovereign Charles IV ordered a major reconstruction, and loved to stay here until Karlštejn Castle was completed. Today, the castle still stands as one of the most important early-Gothic structures in the country, dominated by its huge residential tower. Visitors can explore the castle’s grounds, passageways and halls, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views, historic architecture, fine frescoes, and even original medieval artefacts that were found in the castle.
