Valensole
This quintessentially pretty Provencal village specializes in lavender cultivation and truffle harvesting.
About
Like many villages in this region, Valensole (from the Latin âValley of the Sunâ) is charmingly situated on top of a hill, but with the added bonus of being oriented amphitheater-style overlooking a small river valley. The focal point of this pretty village is the 11th century St Blaise church, complete with a huge bell tower, sitting atop the hill. The surrounding fields are mostly dedicated to growing lavender and the rows of immaculately maintained purple crops are a stunning sight to see when in bloom. Throughout the year farmers will open their doors to you so you can see lavender production in action. If thatâs not enough of a culinary treat then they also produce truffles (for which itâs also famous for), honey, wine, almonds, goatâs and sheepâs cheese, and olive oil. The village makes good use of this and many locally sourced products are on sale, including lavender ice cream.
