Twisted mangrove trees have taken root in these Swahili ruins to create an eerie atmosphere.
Dating back to the 14th century, not much is known about the Jumba la Mtwana ruins and researchers have never been able to uncover the reason the settlement was abandoned just a century after it was built. The ruins consist of four houses, four mosques and a tomb with the spine-chilling inscription in Arabic, “Every Soul Shall Taste Death.” The strategic location near the sea and a source of freshwater should have ensured many prosperous years of growth for any settlement, so it remains a mystery as to why the place was abandoned to fall into ruin. Walk amongst the old foundations and gnarled trees to peek into the past. Photo by Omondi (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Omondi) under CC BY-SA 4.0
