Ronda is famous for the Puente Nuevo, an 18th-century bridge spanning the 328-foot-deep El Tajo gorge that divides the old and new towns. The city is also known as the birthplace of modern bullfighting and features one of Spain's oldest bullrings, the Plaza de Toros, built in 1785. Its dramatic clifftop location and well-preserved Arab architecture make it one of Andalusia's most photographed destinations.
Popular day trips from Ronda include Seville, Andalusia's capital with stunning Moorish architecture and flamenco culture. Granada offers the magnificent Alhambra palace and the white village of Montefrio. Cordoba features the breathtaking Mezquita mosque-cathedral. Malaga provides coastal charm and access to Antequera's ancient dolmens. The white village of Zahara de la Sierra offers dramatic mountain scenery just a short drive away.
The best time to visit Ronda is during spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) when temperatures are pleasant and comfortable for walking. Summer months can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 95 degrees. Winter brings cooler weather but remains mild compared to northern Europe, making it suitable for sightseeing though some mountain roads may occasionally be affected by weather.
Spain uses the euro as its official currency. Credit and debit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops, though smaller establishments may prefer cash for small purchases.
Spanish, also called Castilian, is the official language of Spain. In Ronda and throughout Andalusia, the local accent features distinctive pronunciation that drops certain consonants. English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants catering to international visitors, but learning basic Spanish phrases will enhance your experience and is appreciated by locals.
One full day is sufficient to see Ronda's main attractions including the Puente Nuevo, Plaza de Toros, Arab Baths, and the old town's charming streets. However, staying overnight allows you to experience the town's atmosphere after day-trippers leave and provides time to explore nearby white villages. Two days gives you a more relaxed pace to enjoy local restaurants and hidden corners.
The Plaza de Toros is one of Spain's oldest and most beautiful bullrings, completed in 1785. It can hold 5,000 spectators under distinctive two-story arched galleries. The Romero family founded Ronda's bullfighting school here, establishing rules still used today. Now only one bullfight occurs annually during September's Feria de Pedro Romero. Visitors can tour the ring and museum for insights into this controversial tradition.
Ronda was under Muslim rule from 712 to 1485, leaving significant architectural heritage. The Arab Baths are among Spain's best-preserved medieval bathhouses, featuring distinctive star-shaped roof vents. The Almocabar Gate and sections of the old city walls date from the Islamic period. Many street layouts and building foundations in the old quarter reflect Moorish urban planning and design principles.
