A car trip from Ljubljana to Zagreb

The road from Ljubljana to Zagreb carves through eastern Europe, over soaring mountains, and through jaw-dropping valleys. From the lush greenery of the Slovenian hills to Croatia's rustic countryside, a car trip between the two cities is as colorful and beautiful as Di Vinci's painting kit.

It begins as Ljubljana's multicolored homes make way for the nation's sprawling blue sky. With the window down, you can feel the warm air running through your fingers and the humid aromas igniting your wanderlust. The quaint villages and vibrant green terrain hugging the roads add to the unbeatable vacation spirit.

Despite traveling a short distance over the Croatian border, you'll quickly understand why this nation is now on the tourist map: mesmerizing natural beauty. The crystal-clear rivers meandering the foothills of the unspoiled mountains will guide you to the capital's hotbed of energy, wrapped up in medieval architecture.

You don't want to cram yourself inside a crowded carriage with no air conditioning in the summer. You also don't want an unreliable service that might not arrive on time. So, keep reading our in-depth guide with tips, tricks, and everything else you need for traveling from Ljubljana to Zagreb in 2024!

About Zagreb

After an exciting journey along the top of the Balkans from Ljubljana to Zagreb, you'll arrive at Croatia's capital city. Due to the many advantages of living here, Zagreb is continuously growing, with 800,000 people currently residing along the Sava River.

Zagreb lies in northeastern Croatia, 15 miles from Slovenia and 60 miles from the Hungarian frontier. This is a pivotal reason why the city adopted the baroque style of central Europe as opposed to the Mediterranean vibes of its coastal towns.

Early Zagreb

Zagreb's extensive past began in 10 BC when it established a Roman Catholic diocese here. Over time, Gradec and Kaptol grew on either side of the Sava River. Gradec was a secular town, while Kaptol was the religious center with the Cathedral of St. Stephen.

After years of arguments and rivalries, the town's urban areas combined in the 13th century. As a result, the city of Zagreb came into existence. However, the 16th century was most vital in shaping its cityscape. The Austro-Hungarian Empire conquered the region and developed many buildings in Ban Jelacic Square.

Recent and modern Zagreb

The Yugoslavian era was the most notable period of Zagreb's history. From 1918 to 1992, it was the communist state's second-largest city. Much money went into urban developments and the building of modern infrastructure. Although the area suffered bombings from Allied forces during World War II, it remained relatively intact compared to London, Berlin, and Warsaw.

Today, Zagreb is like an open-air party. A festival atmosphere oozes from the streets, most notably Tkalciceva Street, the main artery of the city's bustling nightlife. Here, you'll find cafes, bars, and restaurants all lining the lane in what used to be the red light district.

But the city is also littered with historical relics. In the upper town, you can wander the cobbled streets, climb ancient towers, and explore the sites of the Gothic, twin-spired Zagreb Cathedral and 13th-century St. Mark's Church, with an iconic tiled roof!

Things to do when you get to Zagreb

For a city that the Western world used to view as chaotic and crime-filled, Croatia's capital has added its name to the list of growing tourist destinations. Here are just a few things to do when you get to Zagreb after your drive from Ljubljana!

Be consumed by the Upper Tower

Every adventure in Zagreb should begin by wandering through the bricked paths of the Upper Town. Here, you'll find iconic landmarks such as St. Mark's Church with its colorful tiled roof and the Lotrscak Tower, offering panoramic city vistas.

Once returning to the Lower Town, pass through the historic Stone Gate, dating back to the 1200s. Legend has it that the structure withstood several storms and fires. But in the 1700s, it was almost destroyed, except for one painting of Jesus. Today, many locals come here to pray and light a candle.

Visit Zagreb Zoo

If you're traveling from Ljubljana to Zagreb as a family, the city zoo should be at the top of your to-do list. But it's not just younger guests that will enjoy the experience. Those of all ages will enjoy the 7100+ animals and multiple daily educational sessions.

An adult ticket costs only €4, giving you access to the extensive setting. But afterward, you can roam Park Maksimir, the city's oldest green space, for free!

Eat and drink through Tkalciceva Street

Tkalciceva Street sums up everything great about Zagreb. The lively atmosphere, colorful buildings, and top-class food and drinking scene run the entire ex-red light district, separating the upper and lower towns.

During the day, you can sample the must-try local delicacies such as cevapi or sip your daily dose of caffeine under the Croatian sunshine. When the sun sets, you can relax with a beer, party until the early hours, or do something in between!

Unwind in Bundek City Park

Bundek City Park is a 15-minute tram ride south of the Lower Town. Yet many tourists overlook this beautiful outdoor setting.

This urban oasis is the ideal space to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and recharge for a day filled with sightseeing. Walk through the leafy walkways and around the man-made lakes to find the perfect place to enjoy a picnic. Or go to one of the eateries dotted along its outskirts.

When is the best time to visit Zagreb?

The Croatian capital offers travelers a memorable experience, no matter when they travel from Ljubljana to Zagreb. But if you're fortunate enough to choose when to visit, consider coming in the shoulder months.

Zagreb in the Spring

Most people consider spring the best time to travel from Ljubljana to Zagreb. The average daily high temperature of 74° Fahrenheit allows you to spend the day moving from relaxing at outdoor cafes to walking in tranquil urban parks. The fewer tourist crowds compared with the summer and the blossoming of wildflowers make this the most pleasant time to explore on foot.

Zagreb in the Fall

Travel from Ljubljana to Zagreb in the fall to get the best bang for your buck! Hotels, airlines, tours, and transportation firms offer significant discounts to attract customers before the slower winter period. Although the air begins to cool down, the average temperature of 67° Fahrenheit is pleasant for spending the day outdoors, surrounded by the leafy walkway's burnt brown foliage.

Which is more beautiful, Zagreb or Ljubljana?
Both capitals are beautiful to look at and explore, but Ljubljana's fairytale old town offers more city charm. It's well maintained, quieter, and has numerous architectural styles, including Baroque, Art Nouveau, and modern designs. However, Zagreb is also a picturesque city, particularly in the Upper Town, the oldest part of the city.
Is there a train from Ljubljana to Croatia?
Up to six direct trains run from Ljubljana to Croatia. Since Croatia has some of the most limited railway lines in the European Union, carriages only arrive in Zagreb. From here, you can travel around the nation. But note that, due to the lack of infrastructure, buses are often the preferred mode of transportation.
Is it difficult to drive from Ljubljana to Zagreb?
The drive from Ljubljana to Zagreb is a straightforward 87-mile road trip. Since Croatia recently joined the Schengen area, there are no official border checks between the nations. You should expect a scenic and effortless ride, whether by rental car, taxi, or private door-to-door service.
Can I get a flight from Zagreb Airport to Ljubljana Airport?
As of 2024, no direct flight goes from Zagreb Airport to Ljubljana Airport. Due to the short distance and Slovenia's stance on eco-friendly measures, it's unlikely that one will appear in the future. Also, the airport transfer, security check, and cost wouldn't make it an efficient mode of transportation.
Is Zagreb safe?
Zagreb is a safe city for solo, female, and family travelers. Despite its checkered past, the area now scores 80 on the safety index. It's considered one of Europe's most secure urban areas. But like in every big city, use common sense when at tourist destinations and walking alone at night.
Is there a direct train from Ljubljana to Zagreb?
On average, four daily direct trains operate from Ljubljana to Zagreb. The shortest journey takes only 2 hours and 9 minutes, while most trains take 2 hours and 32 minutes. You can only purchase cheaper Slovenian Railway tickets at the station. Or you can buy tickets for OBB's more comfortable service online.

Merci Daytrip.”
