Yes, Khao Lak is widely regarded as a family-friendly destination. The beaches are generally calmer than those in Phuket, making them safer for swimming. Tipping is not compulsory in Thailand, but it is a kind and appreciated gesture. In restaurants, leaving small change or rounding up the bill is common. At hotels and spas, a small tip for good service is customary. Taxi drivers do not typically expect a tip, but rounding up the fare is always welcome.
Khao Lak is best known for its beaches, with Nang Thong and Bang Niang among the most popular. The Similan and Surin islands are world-renowned for diving and snorkeling, typically accessible as day trips from November to May. Thailand uses the Thai baht. While larger hotels and some restaurants accept credit cards, cash is preferred at local markets, street food stalls, and smaller businesses in Khao Lak. There are ATMs available in the main town areas, so withdrawing baht on arrival is straightforward.
The best time to visit Khao Lak is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is sunny and calm. December through February are the most popular months, with warm conditions and ideal seas for diving and snorkeling. The wet season runs from May through October, with the heaviest rain falling in September and October. Some businesses close during this period.
Thai is the official language. In Khao Lak's main tourist areas, English is widely understood by hotel staff and many restaurant workers. Outside the main strips, communication may be more limited, so learning a few basic Thai phrases or using a translation app can be helpful.
When visiting temples or sacred sites in Khao Lak and across Thailand, dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees. Remove your shoes before entering temple buildings. Speak quietly and be respectful around monks. Women should avoid physical contact with monks or handing items directly to them. These customs are taken seriously throughout the country and apply to all visitors regardless of background.
Khao Lak has a good selection of restaurants serving authentic Thai dishes. Must-tries include pad thai, green and red curries, tom kha (coconut soup), massaman curry, and fresh seafood grilled or prepared with local herbs and spices. Local night markets are a great way to sample street food at affordable prices. The region also has an excellent selection of tropical fruits.
