Know more about traveling from Scala
The Feast of San Lorenzo on August 10 is Scala's most important celebration, featuring a candlelit procession through the village streets, live music from local bands, and a fireworks display over the valley. On May 1, a traditional pilgrimage to Fontana Carosa draws the whole community together for a morning mass and a picnic among the chestnut groves.
Yes, Scala is an excellent and peaceful base for exploring the wider coast. Ravello is a short walk away, while Amalfi, Positano, and Atrani are all reachable along scenic trails or by road. Its elevated position also offers some of the most dramatic views of the entire coastline, making it a rewarding stop on any Amalfi Coast itinerary.
The town itself is walkable, but Scala's steep, narrow streets and hilly terrain make it challenging for visitors with limited mobility, strollers, or wheelchairs. The village is best explored on foot by those comfortable with uneven cobblestones and inclines. Private transportation is strongly recommended for getting between towns along the Amalfi Coast.
Top highlights include the 11th-century Duomo di San Lorenzo, the Torre dello Ziro lookout tower with sweeping coastal views, and the Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve, home to scenic hiking trails and waterfalls. The nearby hilltop hamlet of Pontone and the chestnut woods surrounding the town are also well worth exploring.
Italy uses the euro (EUR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most shops, restaurants, and hotels, though smaller establishments in rural villages like Scala may prefer cash. It is a good idea to carry some euros with you, especially when visiting smaller towns along the Amalfi Coast.
Spring (April to June) is widely considered the best time to visit Scala. The weather is pleasantly warm, the hillsides are lush and green, and the crowds are much smaller than in peak summer. Fall is also lovely. July and August bring the most visitors and higher temperatures, making trails and roads more crowded.
Italian is the official language of Italy. In Scala and across the Amalfi Coast, English is spoken at most hotels and restaurants catering to visitors, but learning a few basic Italian phrases is always appreciated by locals and can make your experience more enjoyable.
The Amalfi Coast is known for its fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and locally grown lemons. In Scala, chestnuts are a local specialty, used in everything from breads to sweets. Do not leave without trying limoncello, sfogliatella pastry, or a simple plate of pasta alle vongole (pasta with clams) at one of the village restaurants.
