Marbella to Ronda, Zahara de la Sierra, and Olvera: Day trip

Settled in the 9th century BC, Ronda was officially named a city under the reign of Julius Caesar. The scenic setting, and many landmarks made the town popular with the Romantics, attracting the likes of Alexandre Dumas, Ernest Hemingway, and Orson Welles. The 18th century ‘New Bridge’ straddles a 100 meter ravine, and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. In the city proper, you can find one of the country’s oldest bull-fighting rings. The Mondragon palace, originally built in 1314 by the Moorish King Abomelik, was later used as the primary residence for Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Inside you'll find a fascinating museum devoted to Ronda’s rich history, with exhibits including Roman and Moorish tombs. For a unique view of the city, the stunning Cuenca Gardens follow a series of terraces on the ledges of the Tajo river.

Climbing up a forested hillside, this scenic town began as a Moorish outpost due to its strategic position between Ronda and Seville. The town has preserved its medieval labyrinthine urban layout, making it a scenic place to stroll through the narrow streets. Up the hill, the original 13th century castle was restored, with the remains of the medieval village still tucked behind its walls. The quaint town centre is surprisingly well-stocked with attractions, including the Santa María de la Mesa Church, the San Juan de Letrán Chapel, the Clock Tower and the Palominos Bridge.

There has been much debate over the origins of this town, which is situated at the tip of the “White Towns Route”—a series of towns and large villages in Southern Spain known for their whitewashed walls. Some think the city was established around the time of the Celts, while archaeological evidence, including evidence found in the castle foundation, suggests the existence of a Roman settlement. No matter the origins, one thing is certain: Olvera is teeming with history. Visitors can explore the Neoclassical Parish of Our Lady of the Incarnation, built in 1822; the Arab Castle, constructed at the end of the 12th century on a strategic rock giving it the ability to communicate with other nearby castles through signals; the Moorish Wall, supported by seven buttresses; and the Villa District, whose streets will bring you back to a time some 700 years ago.
