About your trip

Germany's most romantic city has earned its reputation across three centuries of poets, painters and philosophers who came, fell in love and put it into words. Heidelberg's ruined castle above the Neckar, its baroque Altstadt and Europe's oldest surviving university combine to produce something that feels simultaneously ancient, intellectual and inescapably beautiful.

Know more about your day trip

Heidelberg sits about 55 miles (89 km) south of Frankfurt Airport. The drive takes around 1 hour each way under normal traffic, making it one of the most popular and easiest day trips from the airport with plenty of time on the ground.
Heidelberg rewards a slow visit. Wandering the old town, lingering at a riverside cafe, walking up to the castle, and crossing the bridge can easily fill a relaxed afternoon. The compact center means you don't have to rush between attractions, which suits travelers who prefer to soak up a place rather than tick off a checklist.
Heidelberg Castle holds the world's largest wine barrel, the German Apothecary Museum, and panoramic terrace views over the Neckar and the old town. The ruined sections of the castle date back to wars and lightning strikes over the centuries, giving it a romantic look that helped define the German Romantic movement.
Try schnitzel, Maultaschen, or sauerbraten at a traditional old-town wirtschaft, paired with regional Baden wines or a Pilsner. Zum Roten Ochsen, dating back to 1703, is a classic student tavern. For something lighter, grab pastries at a cafe along the Hauptstrasse or stop at a Konditorei near the Marktplatz.
Heidelberg is famous for its romantic baroque old town, the red sandstone castle ruins above the Neckar River, and Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386. The city inspired generations of poets, painters, and philosophers, and remains one of the most photographed in Germany. Mark Twain even wrote about it in "A Tramp Abroad."
Walk across the Karl Theodor Bridge for postcard views, browse the Hauptstrasse, Germany's longest pedestrian shopping street, and visit the Studentenkarzer student jail at the old university. The Philosophenweg path on the opposite riverbank offers some of the best views of the castle and town.
You can ride the historic Bergbahn funicular from the Kornmarkt station in the old town, which is the easiest option. If you prefer to walk, the Burgweg path winds up the hillside in about 15 to 20 minutes and offers great views along the way. Both options end near the castle entrance.
Late spring through early fall brings the most reliable weather for walking and outdoor cafes. Summer can be busy with university tourism but lively. Christmas markets in December turn the Marktplatz into one of the prettiest in Germany. Autumn brings beautiful colors to the hills surrounding the castle.
