Main attractions
- One of the largest and most beautifully restored medieval fortresses in Western Europe — Vianden Castle crowns a wooded ridge above the Our River valley in northern Luxembourg, its Romanesque and Gothic towers, palatial residential wings and Byzantine-influenced chapel spanning construction from the 10th to the 14th century
- The castle fell into ruin after being auctioned off by William I of the Netherlands in 1820 and was painstakingly restored across the 20th century — the interior preserves period furnishings, arms collections and the full sequence of royal apartments from the count's hall to the kitchen
What to eat
- The town of Vianden below the castle has good cafés along the Our riverfront — try Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked collar of pork with broad beans), Luxembourg's national dish
