Wander the winding streets of one of the most atmospheric villages in the Madrid region, built entirely from the black slate of the surrounding sierra and once ruled by its own hereditary king.
What to see
- Narrow cobblestone lanes flanked by centuries-old stone and black slate houses, a style known as arquitectura negra, or black architecture
- The Church of San José (1653), now a visitor centre offering self-guided routes through the village's architectural and agricultural history
- The Slate Ecomuseum, an outdoor trail connecting historic structures including threshing floors, wine cellars, stone ovens, and animal enclosures
What to do
- Follow the Ages of Architecture route through the village's most historically significant buildings
- Climb to the upper part of the village for panoramic views across the Jarama Valley and the surrounding sierra
- Stop for lunch at one of Patones' traditional Castilian restaurants, known for hearty local meats and stews (reservation recommended)

Visit one of 19th-century Spain's most ambitious engineering achievements, set against a sweeping landscape of gorge, cliff, and reservoir.
What to see
- The Pontón de la Oliva dam, begun in 1851 as part of the Canal de Isabel II water supply project, one of the earliest large-scale masonry dams built in Spain, and still a striking presence in the landscape
- The dramatic Lozoya river gorge and surrounding sierra that frame the dam, making the site as scenic as it is historically significant
- The nearby ruins of the Romanesque-mudéjar Hermitage of the Virgen de la Oliva, and the Dehesa de la Oliva archaeological site, where remains of a Carpetan-Roman settlement reveal pre-Roman and Roman occupation
What to do
- Explore the reservoir's edge and gorge paths for panoramic views of the water and cliff faces
- Visit the hermitage ruins, set among ancient oak trees just a short walk from the dam
