Overview: car trip from Florence to Cinque Terre

Sleek, high-rise buildings, glamorous promenades lined with trendy cocktail bars, and shopping malls that would make you shop until you drop are all things you won't find after driving from Florence to Cinque Terre. Instead, you'll discover rainbow-colored towns clinging to cliff sides and crystal-clear waters caressing against unspoiled golden beaches!

But before you can travel back in time in this postcard-like setting, you must escape the hustle and bustle of Florence's Renaissance streets. The picturesque E1 highway, lined by iconic cypress trees and traditional villas, will guide you through Tuscany's heart. Perfectly arranged vineyards and medieval cities in the distance allow you to fuel your appetite for adventure as you approach the spaghetti-draped roads of the Ligurian coastline.

As you speed towards Cinque Terre, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Rugged hills on your right and glimmering sea views on your left sandwiched your vehicle in what appears to be an oil painting of Italy. The natural beauty will leave you in a daze, but the salty sea air on your lips and the charming villages like a painter's palette will awaken your senses and mark the end of your breathtaking road trip.

Now that you know how the journey goes, it's time to see how to travel from Florence to Cinque Terre in 2024!

About Cinque Terre

Florence to Cinque Terre is an extraordinary drive. But contrary to popular belief, Cinque Terre isn't a city or village. It's not some mythical fairytale. In fact, it translates to "Five Worlds", made up of five picturebook towns along the Ligurian coastline in northern western Italy.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare is most famous for being the largest and most populous town along the Cinque Terre. It's got a lively nightlife scene during the warmer months when bars and cafes use the cobbled lanes as outdoor terraces. It also has the only sandy beach of the five villages!

Corniglia

Corniglia is unquestionably the least visited and the most off-the-beaten path. Its charming streets give an insight into traditional Italian villages without the herds of tourists. It's also in the epicenter of Cinque Terre National Park, with mesmerizing hiking trails and jaw-dropping lookout points.

Vernazza

Most travelers consider Vernazza to be the most beautiful village along this coast. With lush peaks looming over the baroque buildings and historic harbor, it's easy to see why. The town is home to less than 1,000 residents, but endless eateries line the coastline, offering stunning sea views.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is a paradise for romance. Softly lapping waves, enchanting walkways, and ports packed with colorful fishing boats are all common sites year-round. There are also a handful of cozy bars and seafood restaurants to offer some late-night entertainment.

Manarola

Manarola is the most sought-after town along the Cinque Terre. You'll probably already recognize its pastel-colored homes clutching to plunging ridges and quaint squares surrounded by greenery from Instagram. While Vernazza may be the prettiest village, Manorola unquestionably has the most captivating sea views!

From Florence to Cinque Terre: travel tips

Getting from Florence to the Cinque Terre towns isn't necessarily difficult. However, some insider knowledge can help improve your overall experience!

Purchase the Cinque Terre Card

The Cinque Terre Card is the passport to Italy's most picturesque region. You'll save significant time, hassle, and cash by purchasing the card that best suits your travel preferences. The Cinque Terre Trekking Card gives you access to the hiking trails in the national park nearby, while the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card (also called the "Cinque Terre train card") also lets you board unlimited trains throughout the region!

Use the Cinque Terre express train to travel from one town to the next town, including to the larger city of La Spezia. The travel time to La Spezia takes about 15 minutes from the closest village.

Soak up the local liquids

Getting from Florence to Cinque Terre is a sundrenched excursion. Although staying hydrated is important on this journey, you should also soak up the local wines and thermal waters. Montecatini Alto is one of Europe's best spa towns, where you can unwind in the mineral-rich baths en route. Or you can go wine tasting in Lucca, home to Italy's finest grapes!

Less is more

The less you pack in your suitcase, the more exploring you can do in Cinque Terre. These five coastal towns reside on mountainous and sloping landscapes. Remember to pack light so you're not hurdling oversized cases over cobbled-stone walkways during the average summer temperature of 81°Fahrenheit once you arrive in town!

How to get from Florence to Cinque Terre

The direct train is by far the most popular way visitors travel from Florence to Cinque Terre. However, some alternative options may be more suited to your travel preferences!

Trains from Florence to Cinque Terre

While direct trains are easy to find, you may need to make one or two connections, usually at La Spezia train station, if you are traveling in the low season. Regionale trains are usually slower but are a great alternative to a direct train if you want to spend more time hopping from one village or town to the next in Italy. For some travelers, the slower travel time is worth the extra time spent exploring.

Traveling by train is a straightforward ride. You can buy a ticket at Firenze Santa Maria Novella or online with Trenitalia for the best deals. All direct trains depart from Santa Maria Novarella and arrive at one of the five towns (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore), depending on your final destination.

  • Cheapest train ticket cost: $25 (€22)
  • Average train ticket cost: $29 (€26)

Things to do when you get to Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre isn't just a pretty face. It has a charming personality and a treasure chest full of fun-filled adventures. So, if you can take your eyes off the natural and man-made wonders here, uncover the region highlights after your Florence to Cinque Terre transfer!

Stroll the Blue Trail

The Sentiero Azzurro is a famous hiking trail that connects all five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. This trail offers stunning coastal views, winding through vineyards, olive groves, and dramatic cliffs that plunge into the Mediterranean.

The stretch between Vernazza and Monterosso is the most popular for its breathtaking scenery. The Blue Trail allows you to experience the natural beauty of Cinque Terre while exploring each village's unique character.

Climb Castello di Riomaggiore

You'll have views out of this world everywhere you walk along the Cinque Terre. You'll still get those majestic vistas climbing Castello di Riomaggiore, but you'll also receive an entertaining history lesson.

Lounge along Monterosso Beach

Monterosso Public Beach is the only sandy beach in the five villages of the Cinque Terre. Therefore, there's no better place to kick your feet up, appreciate the sun's rays, and unwind in the vacation spirit.

Plenty of sun loungers are spread along its golden shores, but you might want to come early, as they can fill up, especially during the summer. Once you need to cool off, you can do so with a handcrafted cocktail from the beachside bars or dip in the glimmering waters.

Relax in Vernazza Harbor

Most visitors regard Vernazza as the jewel of Cinque Terre, and its picturesque harbor is the heart of the village. Pastel-colored houses, a small beach, and charming fishing boats encircle the setting.

You can relax at the waterfront cafes, savoring fresh seafood while soaking in the views. The Doria Castle, perched above the harbor, offers a panoramic view of the village, making it a perfect spot for earning likes on Instagram.

When is the best time to visit Cinque Terre?

Italy's Ligurian coast is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and its beauty never fades, whether it's June or January. However, if you're lucky enough to decide when to visit, consider booking a transfer from Florence to Cinque Terre in the shoulder months.

You still get the glorious Mediterranean sunshine but without the tourists from April to May and September to October. Each historic village is home to under 1,000 residents, so streets can feel overcrowded even when only a handful of groups arrive.

With pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, you have more options to eat, drink, and sleep at night, and you'll save notable cash. But the best reason to visit in the spring and autumn is to contribute to sustainable travel. You'll help small businesses year-round and put less pressure on valuable local resources!

It was a fantastic trip.

We were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation

Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.

Daytrip never disappoints

We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.

Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.
